Krebs cycle made easy - Mnemonics for Krebs Cycle/ TCA Cycle/ Citric acid cycle

Hello everyone, welcome to Agrivetforestry Website. In this article,you will get an easy and convenient mnemonics for Krebs Cycle. From this mnemonics, you will be able to memorize all the compounds present in the Krebs Cycle without any mistakes. So,

First of all, let's have some information about the Krebs Cycle.

1) Krebs cycle was discovered by a German-British biochemist Hans A. Krebs by tracing its pathway on the breast muscle of pigeon.

2) This cycle is also called as citric acid cycle because the first stable compound formed in this cycle is citric acid.

3) Citric acid is also most stable compound in Krebs cycle.

4) Most important and most unstable compound in this cycle is α-ketoglutaric acid.

5) Most important step in whole reaction cycle is the production of succinyl Co-A from α-ketoglutaric acid because, during that reaction, both CO2 and NADH2 is produced.

6) The only enzyme found in the wall of mitochondria but not in the matrix is succinate dehydrogenase which is used during the conversion of succinic acid to fumaric acid.

7) Complete breakdown of pyruvate takes place in Krebs Cycle in the matrix of mitochondria when O2 is available.

8) O2 is mandatory compound to run Krebs Cycle, however it does not take part directly in the pathway.

9) After the completion of a complete cycle, 1 pyruvate gives 3NADH2, 2FADH2 and 1GTP.

10) From oxidative phosphorylation (ETS cycle), 1 molecule of NADH2 gives rise to 3 ATP molecules. Similarly, 1 molecule of FADH2 gives rise to 2 ATP molecules.

11) 1 GTP molecule is equivalent to 1 ATP molecule and are interconvertible.

12) So in total, one complete Krebs Cycle gives rise to 12 ATP molecules.

13) For each molecule of glucose, Krebs Cycle runs two times. So, 24 molecules of ATP are produced from a molecule of of glucose during the Krebs Cycle only.

Now, Let's ahead to the mnemonics of Krebs Cycle. So that, we can have Krebs Cycle made easy.

Mnemonic:-

COMPOUNDS PRESENT IN REACTION.
C = Citric acid
I = Isocitric acid
K = α-Ketoglutaric acid
S = Succinyl CoA
S = Succinic acid
F = Fumaric acid
M = Malic acid
O = Oxaloacetic acid

TRICK TO REMEMBER ENZYMES
◾All the name of enzymes have came from the substrate of respective reaction except citrate synthase and aconitase.
eg. if fumaric acid changes into malic acid then enzyme will be fumarase.
◾In any reaction, if there is the presence of ATP, ADP, AMP that enzyme will be kinase.
◾ If there is the presence of NAD+ and NADH2 or FAD+ and FADH2 in the reaction then that enzyme will be dehydrogenase.

Now you can have the following reaction.
Krebs Cycle made easy, Krebs Cycle mnemonics, Krebs Cycle diagram, pyruvate carboxylase, tca cycle steps, tca cycle with structure.

Thank you.
